The effects of a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet (LCKD) on sleepiness and other narcolepsy symptoms were studied. Nine patients with narcolepsy were asked to adhere to the Atkins’ diet plan, and their symptoms were assessed using the Narcolepsy Symptom Status Questionnaire (NSSQ). The NSSQ–Total score decreased by 18% from 161.9 to 133.5 (p = 0.0019) over 8 weeks. Patients with narcolepsy experienced modest improvements in daytime sleepiness on an LCKD.

I was curious, having done Atkins, to what kind of meats and cheese they were eating. I am sure the results would have been better if the diet would have been devoid of lunch meats and such.Besides, Atkins is a very hard way of life. Has there been any research done on a fruit free Paleolithic diet for narcolepsy? That would make more sense-as the compliance of long term Atkins is rather low. Needless to day, I am thrilled that the research is going in this direction!!

A moderate serving of high-quality protein maximally stimulates skeletal muscle protein synthesis in young and elderly subjects

A 113-g serving of lean beef increased muscle protein synthesis by approximately 50% in both young and older volunteers. Despite a threefold increase in protein and energy content, there was no further increase in protein synthesis after ingestion of 340 g lean beef in either age group.
