US prepares to house hurricane victims

Authorities as far away as Utah and Detroit are preparing to house evacuees from Hurricane Katrina for many months, as the US grapples with the longer term implications of relocating hundreds of thousands of refugees.
While rescuers try to assess a regional death toll estimated by the New Orleans mayor at up to 10,000, it is becoming clear that the next phase of the tragedy may involve an exodus of people unparalleled in modern American history. “We are basically moving the city of New Orleans to other parts of the country,” said Michael Chertoff, secretary of homeland security. “This is a tremendous medium-term and long-term challenge.”
